Advisable Aquarium Plants – Function and Design

Aquatic plants for a healthy aquarium without algae

The first impression of an aquarium derives certainly stronger by its vegetation as by its fish stocking. In addition, a good growth of aquarium plants is often the critical factor for the functioning of an aquarium. The plants remove water pollutants, provide oxygen for the respiration of the fish and are the best prevention for algae. Although it is possible to run aquariums with few or without plants, a good vegetation facilitates the maintenance and cleaning of the aquarium significantly. In an other article, I described a favorable set up, which leads to a healthy plant growth in aquarium. Here I would like to introduce the plants that have established themselves in my tanks because of their simple culture, their forms and colors, their functionality and not at least by their beauty as my standard plants.

Ceratophyllum demersum - Rigid Hornword

The all-rounder with special abilities regarding pollutant uptake and algae prevention.

Sagittaria subulata var. pusilla - the Dwarf Sagittaria

An unpretentious and fast-growing plant for amazing grasslands.

Cryptocoryne x willisii

An easy-care foreground plant.

Bacopa monnieri II

A robust plant for the background.

Nymphaea lotus – the red or green Tiger Lotus

An imposing solitary plant for large aquariums.

Lemna minor / minuta – Small and Tiny Duckweeds

As allrounder hated and beloved.

Hemianthus micranthemoides - the Pearl Weed

A delicate stems plant suitable for the modeling of hedges.

Hemianthus callitrichoides 'Cuba' - the Cuban Pearl Weed

Probably the smallest foreground plant in the aquarium with good growth characteristics.
