Sagittaria subulata var. pusilla - the Narrow Leaf Sag

Narrow Leaf Sag Sagittaria subulata var. pusilla is one of the few grass-like plants that is growing very well, even on weak illumination and a small amount of dissolved CO2, in contrast to Echinodorus tenellus.

The Narrow Leaf Sag does not need additional fertilizer necessarily. At moderate stocking of fish, the nutrients, that are introduced by the fish food, are sufficient. Therefore the risk of algae growth through fertilizer is small. The aquatic plant generates very fast runners and soon a thick grassland.

This property is highly interesting particularly for aquariums, which should present a uniform grass landscape. For tanks with many different plants the Sagittaria is therefore not so suitable, because it greatly expands and must be permanently removed among the other plants. In a aquarium with grassland, it is extremely easy to care, since there is no need to cut it because of its maximum height of 20 - 30 cm.

However, frequently the stock should be thin out broadly in order to rejuvenate the plants. For example it is a good way to free large areas completely of plants allowing Narrow Leaf Sag to reconquer them. The new plants grow on the bare ground an extended period of time much shorter (about 5 cm), so that a very natural impression of an overgrown glade is achieved.
