Leporacanthicus sp. 'L241' - a beautifull L-number Catfish

Description

This beautiful Catfish are already living half a year in my 150 liter tank. The comparatively large white dots on a dark background have fascinated me from the beginning. This Catfish can be found in the upper Rio Orinoco, Amazonas, Venezuela. The catfish grow up to 30 cm and having a very high dorsal fin. Large males will have a broader head and stronger pectoral spines than the females. The males develop short, thick dermal teeth on the head and snout rim. The edge of the lip is smooth while the upper lip is provided with barbels.

Keeping

The species Leporacanthius sp. "L241" is quiet calm and well tolerated. The Catfish is a bit shy and keeps himself in the background. For feeding both, frozen food as well as flake food or food tablets, is willingly taken. Despite its rather cautious nature to incident from outside, this catfish is assertive at feeding against other roomies in the aquarium. A separate feeding is therefore usually not necessary.

The water temperature should be between 26° and 29°C. The water conditions are reported with pH values of 5.5 - 7.5, 0-5° KH and 0-20° GH. For keeping of the hardness of the water is probably mostly irrelevant. This Catfish is said to be very robust and almost indestructible. I don't have other experiences until now.

Zucht

A successful breeding of Leporacanthicus sp. "L241" is so far unknown. An attempt should be oriented at the known breeding reports of Leporacanthicus cf. galaxias "L7" and Leporacanthicus galaxias "L29".
